...refinishing the first dresser didn't drive me batty enough!
I decided I needed to refinish a second one.
This dresser is from IKEA.
We bought it back in Texas as part of a bedroom set for our guest room.
Once we moved here it became the perfect size to hold Bitsy's belongings so it went in her room.
However, I had always wanted the white version of this dresser for our room.
Yet I didn't want to A.) Drive the 5 hour round trip for it OR B.) Pay the $299 for it.
So that is when we decided to search for and refinish a different dresser for Bitsy's room and ultimately refinish this one for our room.

So here it is.
It got quite scratched up in the move.
Drawers removed.
We opted not to sand this dresser before beginning.
Since were weren't dealing with a surface that might not accept paint it didn't seen as important.

I did, however, still putty all the deep gouges on the top of the dresser.
I primed with the Kilz.
Then I did a light sanding.
Then I painted the entire dresser with the same white I had used for Bitsy's dresser.
Finally, I sealed it with the water based polyurethane.
Did you know that you use water based so it doesn't yellow over time?
Finally we moved it up to our room.
The first time Bud & I visited my Grandparents in Hawaii we drove up the mountains.
At the very top of the mountains was a quaint little shop.
I would have loved to have bought one of everything.
But we settled on 4 starfish ceramic drawer knobs.
Up till now they were on our nightstands.
We opted to place them on the top 4 drawers and put those drawer pulls on our nightstands.
The night stands are next to get refinished and I thought that if they shared the same style drawer pull it might pull them together a bit more.
The only problem was that the dark drawer pulls just didn't go.
With anything.
So out comes the spray paint with built in primer!
I chose a Krylon (because it's good on most all surfaces) in Gloss Dover White.
I stuck them in a styrofoam block...
yes I did attempt to stick them through the cardboard first, but it didn't work well.
Then I sprayed them with a few coats following the instructions on the can for the drying time between coats.

Now they match the dresser perfectly.
And here it is. finished.
Excuse the sparse-ness of it.
I have one more tweak I'd like to make, but I'm waiting for the burlap to arrive.
I'll be sure to share pictures once I finish fully.
That's a picture of us with my Grandparents.
The pitcher has an awesome story behind it!
A few years ago when we still lived in Austin, Bud had started to research his family history.
We knew his early ancestors had settled about 2 hours south of where we lived in Fredericksburg, TX.
So on our first trip there to do some research...we also did a little shopping.
I stumbled across the unique whale pitcher/vase in a store and after much deliberation we went back to purchase it.
The next time we made a trip down to Fredericksburg, we discovered that Bud's Great Great Great Great Grandfather had owned property on the main street.
Ultimately, we discovered that the store we bought the vase/pitcher at sat on the property that he had owned.
The current owner was the grandson of the man who cared for Great Great Great Great Grandpa on his death bed.
HOW crazy!
It's so cool to me though that even though the pitcher/vase has no real tie to the actual ancestors, just the simple fact that we bought it in the same place where they lived/ran a saloon (yes they owned a saloon...he was German....beer/German...those are synonyms right), is the coolest thing ever!
Have you ever had something crazy like this happen?
Anyway, that was the 2nd dresser remodel, for more detailed step by step instructions on refinishing read my other post about refinishing.
Now I just need to find the motivation to redo those night stands!
I hope you have a Blessed Thursday!

P.S. Last week I was featured at The Life of Jennifer Dawn!
If you haven't been over there you should take a look at all the awesome items people are linking up!

Wow! You are brilliant at this. I have some furniture pieces at my house that you are welcome to come redo. :)
ReplyDeleteIt looks wonderful! I'm looking forward to scouring some garage sales in the coming weeks to find a new dresser for us. I love white dressers, so if we buy one that isn't, you've inspired me to paint it myself :)
