Nesting Necklace

When you put yourself on a strict budget you really start to take notice of all the areas of your life where surprise expenses pop up.
Take birthdays for example.
We do have a small amount allotted to go into a special account each month to cover the expenses of family birthday gifts and to help us save up for Christmas.
Still when you set a dollar limit on gift giving sometimes it seems you can't find anything in that range.
Am I right?
Do any of you struggle with this?
Well this year with my Mom's birthday I set out to make her something I'd seen online.
I'm sure many of you have seen them as well, but maybe you didn't realize how simple they were to make.
You can make this gift for under $25!

Here Is What You'll Need:
- 24 gauge jewelry wire
-beads of your choosing (to be the eggs...did you know that oval beads are hard to find)?
-A small set of jewelry tools helps. (I got this set of 3 for 8.99 minus the 40% off coupon)
-You'll also need a chain to hang your finished product from, some people by the supplies to make chains....I went to here.  It was easier for me.

First things first you'll want to thread your wire through the center of your beads.
(I did 4 beads but you can do however many your heart desires)
Then take the bead closest to the end and  using your little pliers you'll wrap it around itself just enough for that bead to be secure.
Bring all your beads together and create your egg cluster.
Now you get to start wrapping your wire around the eggs in true nest making fashion.
I just kept going until I felt there was enough 'nest'.
Now you will need to secure your nest.
So you'll want to cut a couple feet of wire (you don't want to keep messing with the entire bundle).
You'll start to feed it through from back to front.
Wrap each section 3 to 4 times.
I decided I would use my first section as the top and I used the little round pliers to hold the wire as pictured.
I then created a loop and wrapped my wire around a few times so the chain would have an opening to slide through.
Once completed I wrapped the wire back through the nest.
I continued to feed the wire behind my pendant and wrap it around the 4 sections of the necklace to ensure my nest was secure.
The finished product!
What do you think?
It takes a little patience, but for less than $11.50 I had a beautiful pendant for my Mom's necklace.
Once the chain arrived and I mailed it off I had spent less than $25, not too shabby eh?!

Do you know anyone who might like one of these necklaces?
Are you willing to try to make your own?
If so write a comment with the link to your post where you show your necklace off!
I'd love to see all the variations.

  2. I love this! I bought everything I would need to make some of them for the mothers in our lives for Mother's Day, but then we moved the day beforehand and it just never happened. Sigh!
I'm still going to make them, though, so that I can give them to them at some point!
    Yours turned out beautifully!
