"No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening-it's painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way". ~ Hebrews 12:11
My NLT Life Application Study Bible Says the following:
We may respond to disciple in several ways: (1) We can accept it with resignation; (2) we can accept it with self-pity, thinking we really don't deserve it; (3) we can be angry and resentful toward God; or (4) we can accept it gratefully, as the appropriate response we owe a loving Father.
As a child when I did something wrong I received a spanking.
If I lied...I recall receiving 3 spankings.
"This is for lying to me".
"This is for lying to your Mom".
"This is for lying," my Dad would proclaim.
I know that many people don't believe in spankings, and that is fine.
I am thankful for the spankings I received as a child because it helped mold me into the adult I am today.
I learned quickly not to do things I wasn't supposed to because I didn't want to be spanked.
My brother was not as keen to this.
As soon as he would start to do something I knew he shouldn't I would try to warn him..."Don't you remember what happened last time you did that"?
He didn't think his older sister knew anything so he would continue misbehaving and then he would be shocked to receive a spanking.
The Bible tells us that discipline isn't supposed to be enjoyable.
It is supposed to be painful.
I think that is so we remember that doing bad = pain.
The 2nd half of this verse though is SO important.
"But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way".
By being disciplined we yield right living.
Discipline doesn't happen to only children as I'm sure many of you have experienced.
Speeding = tickets.
Laziness (can)= getting fired.
Crimes = jail time.
Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.
However, people can and will eventually learn after being punished that they don't like it.
So the best thing for them is to stop doing what is wrong.
(Don't get me wrong, I know that there are still people who will speed always, there are criminals who never stop doing horrible things), but the point is that if we didn't discipline them there would never be any hope of them reverting from their ways.
I often wonder if the adults who do so many horrible things were disciplined as children?
(Again, I don't mean beatings here, that is a whole other topic).
What I'm referring to is did they have parents who took the time to notice when their child did something naughty?
Was their punishment equal to the 'crime' committed?
"afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained this way".
Maybe it's because I am a new Mommy.
Maybe it is because I got spankings.
Whatever the reason, I know that disciplining my children is not a choice.
It is an obligation for me to figure out how and to what extent I mold my children based on their actions.
I want to raise well mannered children who are fruitful in all they do.
So the next time your little one does something wrong, it is your duty to punish them according to how YOU see fit.
Just remember though, the Bible says "no discipline is enjoyable while it is happening".
So whether it be time out, restrictions, spankings etc., it will pay off in the end.
And I guarantee you that your children will someday thank you.
I hope that you have a Blessed Friday!
