This tank top is a product of Pinterest inspiration...a.k.a. Pinspiration!
Look here for the original tutorial.
She was making the tank for her little one.
I, on the other hand, wanted one for me!
Being on a strict budget means that buying clothes can be few and far between.
So making do with remnant fabric and what I have on hand can sometimes get me just a little something to hold off that retail therapy.
First I found a shirt I had that I felt fit me well.
Long enough and comfy.
Next I traced the outline of the shirt and then added a 1/2" seam allowance all the way around.
My grandma taught me years ago that you don't need fancy tracing paper for patterns.
An old newspaper will do just fine!
I picked up this fabric for uber inexpensive at Hobby Lobby.
It was different.
It was unique and I just hoped it would translate into a shirt fairly easily.
Here is a little trick I'd like to share with you.
They sell all sorts of fabric pens and such at the fabric shops, but if you have kids, you might just have some of these giant sidewalk chalk sticks sitting around.
Grab one and keep it in your sewing box.
It works great for tracing your pattern onto your fabric.
AND after you wash everything it washes out super easy!
My shirt was 4 seperate panels.
1 large back piece.
2 front/side pieces
1 center piece
Using the tutorial found here I copied the pleat concept.
It is probably my favorite part of the entire shirt.
Once all my sections were sewn together I used store bought biased tap to create trim around the bottom and top, as well as to create the straps.
It's far from perfect.
However, I feel like it turned out pretty good for my first piece of clothing.
What was your first piece of clothing?
How did you feel about the finished product?
I have a whole Pinterest board dedicated to sewing and I am just eyeballing what will be next.
I have a friend's birthday coming up soon and I have an idea for a little something for her classroom.
I also have Halloween right around the corner and I'll be whipping up Bitsy's costume.
Do you make or buy your little one's costumes?
If you don't have kids did your parents make or buy your costumes growing up?
Well I hope you have a Blessed Thursday!

This turned out really cute. I've only ever made a skirt for myself. I'm a chicken about messing up. ;)
