Back in the day...

....when I lived at home, my Dad would try, once a month, to do a Father/Daughter day with me.

It typically involved walking around the mall, eating cinnamon rolls until we were sick, going to the movies, lunch, etc...anything that would get us out of the house to hang out and talk for the day.

Well since Bud had to work we decided that Friday would be Father/Daughter day!

We had a late start getting out of the house, but we made up for time.

We hit up 2 separate Half Price Books.

Stopped at The Tea Leaf & Coffee Beanery for cookies and coffee (Chai Tea Latte for me).

Then we stopped by the mall.

Let me remind you...it's Black Friday.

I had no intention of shopping on Black Friday, but there was one cardigan I'd been eyeing at American Eagle for a few weeks and I needed to know if it had been marked down more yet.

So we stopped at the mall and I worked my way to AE and then I heard some magic words from the cashier, "Everything in the store is an additional 20% off today".

Sweet!  This cardigan was originally $44.50, but the last time I was in the store it was marked down to $29.95, today with the additional 20% off I was able to finally bring on my sweater for only $26.00!!!

Isn't she pretty?  Super comfy too!

Dad & I came back to the apartment for a bit and then headed over to Bud's work.

We had plans to watch the Harry Potter Movie at the IMAX at 4pm!

All in all it was a great Father/Daughter day (not as long as they had once been, but then again we didn't have to drive 40 minutes to get to a decent sized city like we had in Kansas.

After the movie we ate dinner at El Chile...it was scrumptious!

The rest of the night we watched comedy on TV....this tends to be where Bud & Dad relate to each other best!

SATURDAY

Was another day full of activity.

We were on the road at 8:50am to head out to the town of Hye, Tx.  

It's just big enough for you to say, "Hi" before you realize you are no longer in Hye anymore.

Anyways, there was a Bourbon Distillery out there that Dad had read about so we booked a tour and made the hour long trek to learn about Bourbon!

We tried the Bourbon and I guess I just don't have a taste for it, Bud either...not our cup of tea I suppose.
Later that afternoon we went down to South Congress and wasted time by visiting some of the little shops.
Then we went and saw Tangled 3D at the Alamo Drafthouse!
It was an adorable Disney movie.
In fact I felt that Disney finally returned to the way they did movies when I was a kid (despite the 3D stuff)!
The story line was creative, the songs were fun and Dad noticed that it sounded a lot like the Little Mermaid songs.
When we got home we discovered that, sure enough, the composer was the same in both The Little Mermaid & Tangled.
Tangled is definitely a fun movie to bring the kids to see, or the inner child :D

It really has been a spectacular few days....but I'll fill you in on more later.
I'm off to do MORE Christmas crafting.

Broaden

In order to catch everyone up after this extended weekend I'm going to cover a few days at a time over the next few posts!

It's been a GREAT past few days!

Wednesday after a grueling day at work (it's only grueling because I knew I was hours away from starting my holiday weekend!) I was able to rush home and see my DAD!!

Bud picked him up from the airport and entertained him while I "toiled" away at my half empty office.

For dinner that night we ordered from Artz Rib House.

There is a special you can get, but only if you call it in for pickup!

It's 2 pulled pork sandwiches for 5.50.

We ordered 4 and settled in to watch Zombieland (Dad hadn't seen it yet).

After we ate and while we were still watching the movie I started on the Thanksgiving food.

I made a pumpkin and pecan pie, the mashed potatoes, and my world famous cream corn.

THANKSGIVING DAY!!!

We were up bright and early.

Since Bud & I have been in Austin we....he has had a tradition of running in the Turkey Trot, this is his 5th year!

It says there were more than 18,500 people registered for the run and a quarter of a million dollars was raised!

When we got home I started preparation of the Turkey and the rest of the Thanksgiving Fix-ins.

Turkey, Stuffing, Mashed Garlic & Cheese Potatoes, Cream Corn, Asparagus w/ Hollandaise sauce, Pumpkin Pie, & Pecan Pie...yummy!

After we ate Bud rushed off to make it to the UT vs A&M game.

Dad & I relaxed at home and at the last minute decided to go see Megamind 3D!

It was a really good movie and one that I would highly recommend.

I don't think it really matters if you see in in 3D or not, in fact I'm a little tired of 3D movies, but the movie is cute and funny and exactly what we expected it would be!

Dad & I are movie people....we can watch them all day long and we are in heaven.

So there are the first couple days of Dad being in town, I'm off to work on a few more Christmas presents so I hope everyone has a Blessed Sunday evening!

Buried!

Oh my goodness it has been 4 days since I have blogged!
I have been buried up to my eyeballs in to do lists and crafts.
It's not all bad, but it sure is exhausting!

SATURDAY:
Cleaned house & then escaped the confines of the house to enjoy some 78 degree weather and do some photos for my 1st commissioned piece!

After I got home my friend HD came over and we made Rag Wreaths.

Bud was studying at the library, but after he got home we met up with friends across the street.  They played washers.

SUNDAY:
Church!
Afterwards we finished up our Thanksgiving grocery shopping and headed home.
I did some more cleaning and then convinced the hubby we should get some fresh air.
We went out and I got a few final photos for my commissioned piece.
When we got home I did a little cleaning and worked on Christmas gifts.

MONDAY:
How did the weekend pass so quickly?
Last night was the final night of my photography class.
If I had to grade this class I'd give it a B. 
I felt that we focused too much on software such as photoshop and not enough of capturing a good picture from the start. 
That was frustrating. 
But I did learn some great things that I didn't know before so that's a plus.
When I got home I finished another craft I started this past weekend

I've been a Busy Biz to say the least and tonight is not promising any less busy!
1.) I need to pick up the pictures I took this weekend and go pick out framing and matte board.
2.) Pick up pet food
3.) Change sheets
4.) Do 2 loads of laundry and put away about 5 loads total!
5.) Vacuum & Mop
6.) Make the mashed potatoes for Thanksgiving
7.) Try to squeeze out a few of my Christmas gifts that I'm hand making.

So in case I don't get to back here until after Thanksgiving:

Bible Verse Friday #4

Psalm 1:1-2
"Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night".

Who do you surround yourself with?
Do you hang out with mean-spirited people?
Does the group your involved in leave you feeling torn down instead of built up?
Why do we allow people's negative attitudes to affect our positive ones?
It's amazing the power people's words have on us and others, most of the time without either party fully realizing it.

God wants us to uphold his law day and night.
When we wake up we should be filled with God's love and we should do our very best to spread that love throughout the day and night.
Now don't get me wrong, we all have bad days and this is what makes us human.
God is the only true perfect being.

He tells us in Leviticus 19:18
"Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself.  I am the LORD".

Again in Matthew 5:43
"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy'.

Mark 12:31 says
"The second is this:: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these".

And finally Galatians 5:14
"For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: "Love your neighbor as yourself".

I could go on and on...
When we realize we are in a situation where our attitude is impacted negatively we must escape.
We must not allow others to harm our loving hearts.
I'm positive that you know that person.
The one who no matter what SOMETHING is going wrong in their life.
Do you know a person who no matter what is going wrong in their life they still give God the glory?
Are you that person?  Do you strive to be that person?
It's hard, trust me I understand.
Someday I will explain the worst day of my life and I will explain how despite everything I praised God.
I'm not saying it was an easy task by any means.
I'm just saying that God is good all the time and if he brings us to it he will bring us through it.
A co-worker shared something with me:

"It's how you react to being in the fire that defines you", "Some people will say, 'God why have you forsaken me' others will sing his praises".
People are ALWAYS watching us whether we know it or not and they are waiting to see how we react.

So check yourself.
Check your surroundings.
Whose footsteps are you following in?
Whose company are you sitting in?
Should you change paths or switch seats, maybe.
But I also think that these are opportunities for us to remember God's law and to minister to those wicked sinners and mockers.
That is what God would want for you.

BUNCO

Yesterday a lady I go to church with celebrated her birthday.
For her birthday she invited a bunch of ladies over for BUNCO.
I had never played before.
When I worked at a bank back in Kansas there was a group of ladies who played monthly.
I honestly had no idea what it involved, but I knew that everyone who played it always had fun.
So last night I went to SS's house and learned BUNCO.
It's a very simple concept and it's fun.
The only downfall is that while your playing you can't really hold conversation, because you are too focused on the game and counting.
The only real times to chat are when you first get there and your waiting for everyone to show up, during the short break, and after.
I stayed a while after to chat with D, she was super nice and I felt a real connection with her.
She seems grounded, she is one of SS's oldest friends.
I wish I could have stayed later, but it was a 25 minute drive home and already 10 pm.
I have to get up at 5:45 in the morning to get ready for work.
Let's just say I'm dragging today : P

And tonight is not looking promising for sleep either.
It's good though!
After work I have to shower and get gas in my car before I drive to Waco.
If I would have known yesterday that I was driving to Waco tonight I probably wouldn't have chatted late last night and I def. would have gotten up earlier today to shower before work.
Anyway.....why am I driving 2 hours to go to Waco tonight?
Well my Colorado friend JM is in Dallas this weekend and Waco is the half way point. 
The other great thing is she is bringing with her Dallas friend JP!
We are going to meet for a "quick" dinner, I need to be home bound as close to 8:30 as possible.
That'll get me home at 10:30 and hopefully in bed by 11, yawn!
I'm tired just thinking about it.
I will have to miss small group tonight, but Eric will apologize for me and I will def. see everyone the week after Thanksgiving.

I think that's all for now, I have a busy afternoon so I hope everyone else has a blessed Thursday!

Bliss

Right now I am hanging out in a very mellow state.
A wonderful lady who works with Bud also does massage therapy on the side.
Fortunate for me, Bud booked me an appointment with her.
She came to the apartment (yes I didn't have to go anywhere!)
And she massaged all of my baggage away.

I could feel the tension in my shoulders and she spent a lot of time focused in that area.
This is my 3rd massage with her and she said this was the worst she had ever seen my shoulders.
I know that's where I carry all my emotions so that wasn't a surprise after the week I had last week.
The 1st & 2nd worst days of my life as well as other drama that is since resolved.
I was carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders and let's just say my shoulders were done!

So I'm in my comfy pjs, with my big red robe, and hubby's Tempur-Pedic slippers.  Candles are lit and I'm about to make some hot tea to soothe this sore throat I'm fighting.  I'm not sure if it's allergies or a cold, but I want it gone, hopefully the massage will flush all those nasty toxins right out and I'll be right as rain by the weekend!

Sorry I haven't had many pictures to post lately.
Last night was my photography class and we covered a lot of information about editing.
I know a good amount of that, but I did still learn somethings.
I told my instructor that I was sorry I had missed last weeks class, but my situation limited me from being there.
They had talked about spot metering and I understood the concept when he re-explained it in class, but I didn't know how to do it on my camera.  He took all of 5 minutes to graciously explain it.  I don't have the ability to spot meter with this camera, but I can do partial metering which can yield similar results.
Our homework is to go through existing photos and find our worst pictures, next class he will diagnose and see if there is anyway to fix the pictures, that'll be our last class!
I have my own homework assignment that involves getting out and capturing so cool letters for my first commissioned piece.

Another random subject, I think I know what Bud is getting for his birthday.  I know that Christmas is first and right around the corner, but January 20th is his Birthday and I will need all the time I can get to try to make this!  I'm hoping I can pull it off!  Can't mention what it is, but I think he'll be happy.

Bombarded...

but in a good way.
After last week, being bombarded is helping me feel normal again!
So seriously my To Do List is growing by the minute and I'm texting and emailing and planning and plotting like never before.
Let's take a look at my week ahead (excluding all things work related)-

Monday- Photography Class tonight from 6-8 and then a movie with the husband...I know it'll be a late night!
Tuesday- 1.5 hour long massage (at my apartment, which means no driving home afterwards)- I will be the opposite of productive after the massage, haha
Wednesday- Clean guest bathroom & the hall floorboards. Possible dinner with an out-of-state friend and if that falls through then I may go learn to play BUNCO for a lady a church's birthday.
Thursday- Deep Clean Living room & Small Group
Friday- AFROTC TGIF
Saturday- In the morning I have BIG plans to get out and take some pictures for a friends Christmas Present to her husband, in the afternoon I have BIG plans to hang out with a co-worker/friend and teach her to make a Rag Wreath, while making my Christmas one.  We will watch a movie and tie a lot of knots!
Sunday-Church, Deep Clean Our Bathroom & Bedroom, learn how to use this contraption my Mother gave me to convert VHS to DVD (I promised her I'd have all her VHS converted before I came to visit at Christmas!)

See what I mean....it's a busy week, but I'm so excited because it means my Dad will be here before I know it!  It means that Christmas will be here shortly after that.  And it means that next semester is just around the corner, which in turn means Bud will graduate and commission in approx 185 days from today!!!!  So Super Exciting!

I hope everyone else is just as excited for the hustle and bustle that the holidays bring.

As for me, well, since the guys were at the game, I putzed around Hobby Lobby picking up materials for my Christmas present projects & my Christmas Rag Wreath.  I need to get started on that since I plan to hang it the day after Thanksgiving!

Bible Verse Friday #3

The verse today:
Colossians 1:9-"For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you.  We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that gives,"

let's continue reading verses 10-14:
"so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light.  For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins".

This is a letter written by Paul, I believe, to the church.
He wrote it letting them know they were cared about, prayed for, loved, and blessed.

How often do we take for granted the people in our lives?
Have you ever thought to randomly tell someone that you love them or that you think of them?
Have you ever just prayed for someone without prompting or request?

I know I am guilty of some of these things, but Paul reminds us that we should remind people how they have blessed us and how blessed they are.
We should remind people that God has an amazing plan for them and that it unfold more each and every day.
I'm making this short and sweet today, but I think what I walk away from this thinking is as follows.

Our churches as leaders, our work places have boss's, our government has appointed staff.
From the day we know who they are we should pray for them.
We should continually ask God to fill their heads with knowledge of his will.
In doing so we are giving these officials strength that maybe they can't comprehend.
We are asking God to help guide them, when maybe they do not know where or what they are supposed to do next.

So even though this is a little prompting, don't forget to pray for all the people who you look up to today.
Don't forget to pray for the people, even if you didn't put them there, who are appointed to important positions.
We may not always be able to control who is in control of Earth, but we can control how we treat and pray for them, via God our Heavenly Father.

Been Around

I hope so.

Bud & I!

My father's parents, both of them, served in the Navy.
My Uncle served in the Navy.
My Father served in the Air Force and then the Army, he made a career of it.
My Brother is currently serving in the Air Force.
My Husband has served in the Army and Air Force Reserves and will commission into the Air Force in May 2011.
My Brother-in-law, Bud's 1st brother, is preparing to commission into the Army.
My other Brother-in-law, Bud's 2nd brother, is serving in the Air Force.

All I seem to know is military life.
I used to swear that I would never marry a military man.
I used to think when I was younger that the military stunk because they always made us move.
Then I got stuck in Kansas for a few years to long.
When Bud told me that he wanted to go back to school and he wanted to commission I was so excited.
I am so excited.
We have 189 days until commissioning!
I know where we are going and I can't wait until next semester when we find out WHEN we are going.

Anyways this is just a friendly reminder to thank a Veteran today.
I know I did.
Happy Veteran's Day to those who have, do, and will serve.
Without you we wouldn't be able to live the lives we do.

Blessed is Our God!

Sorry I missed everyone yesterday.
Quite honestly, yesterday was the worst day of my life.
Unfortunately, I am not at liberty to discuss the events of yesterday.
I am fine, Bud is fine so please know that we are fine.
I will probably be absent again tomorrow.
I hate having to be cryptic, but this is not the time or place for me to speak.

I have amazing people here in Austin who have surrounded and lifted us up during this time.
For that I am forever grateful.
The title may be misleading, but Bud & I believe in praising God in all things.
His plan is to prosper us and help us grow.
I once had a lady tell me, "If he brings you to it, he'll bring you through it".
Let's just say today is a better day than yesterday and each coming day will get better.
I know God loves us.
That's all there is to say.

Bible Verse Friday #2

Today's verse caught me off guard. 
I get my daily verse from Bible Gateway and today's verse literally made me go, "Hmmm how am I going to elaborate on this"?
Well I'll try and let's just say that one verse is not going to be sufficient.

The verse today is:
Romans 13:6= "This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God's servants, who give their full time to governing".

I feel like the only way we can really dive into this verse is if we read the verses leading up to this Romans 13:1-5="Let everyone be subject to governing authorities, for there is no authority except for that which God has established.  The authorities that exist have been established by God.  Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgement on themselves.  For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong.  Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority?  Then do what is right and you will be commended.  For the one in authority is God's servant for your good.  But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason.  They are God's servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.  Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.

I still feel a little uneasy about this scripture.  I feel like it's saying that we should trust our government because it was appointed by God, but I'm sure many of us think that our government is farther from God than it should be.  We think government and we think corruption and disdain.
So how can we break this down and apply it to current day?
Verse 6 our main focus today talks about taxes, but for some reason when I think of authorities and those that "give their full time to governing" I am actually brought back to the heads of our churches.  I think of the taxes more as tithe.  We should tax ourselves 10% and give that to the church so that the individuals whom God has appointed to lead us will be paid for their services.
I may be taking this completely out of context in fact I am sure I am.
If we think about regular taxes I'm sure many of us dread the beginning of the year when we gather all our paperwork and either prepare our taxes ourselves or have someone do it for us. 
I know that I worry that MAYBE THIS year I didn't pay enough out of my paycheck and WHAT IF we own money? 
I can say that we have been blessed enough to never have to pay taxes.
Obviously if you work you are supposed to pay taxes. 
Yet we hear stories of celebrities who get caught up in tax evasion and own millions of dollars.
We have heard of people being audited and owing money.
Why do people try so hard to hide money. 
Like the scripture says: "Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority?  Then do what is right and you will be commended.  For the one in authority is God's servant for your good.  But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason."

I know that if I am ever audited I should be fine, I have, to the best of my knowledge done everything I can to pay my fair share.  I know that I am free of punishment from the government because I have done nothing wrong. 
How about we apply this concept of government to any authority figures we have in our lives.
If we do good we have nothing to fear, if we are sneaky and do wrong we should be nervous because we will be found out and punished.
I'm not saying don't question authority, but I'd like to remind everyone to pray for our authorities. 
Because whether you chose them or not they are here for the time and all we can do is pray God's will over them.

Again, I'm sorry if this was a rambling post....I'm definitely still working on how to best approach these Bible Verse Fridays.

Beaming & Busy

Yesterday was one of those days where nothing significant happened.
A day when I could summarize most of my day in a Facebook status that appeared something like this: Biz work-check, flu shot-check, vote-check, grocery shopping-check, workout-check, time to relax!

As you can see nothing exciting.

The exciting part came last night at nearly 9 p.m.

A friend from high school messaged me asking if I could help her out.

She had seen a picture project I did for my brother-in-law & Dad (both pictured below) last Christmas and was curious if I could make one for her to give to her husband. (In order to keep with my policy I'm not showing the entire projects to protect everyone's last name)

All of these letters are pictures I took here in Austin.

I like to use a different font for each letter, even if there are repeating letters.    

I was so excited to be offered the opportunity to share my creativity that I told her I would just charge her for the cost of the project and wouldn't take anything more than that.  But, she said I had to charge for my services.  So the reason I'm beaming is because this is my FIRST commissioned piece of work!  I feel so honored.  

The reason I'm busy is because for the past few days at work a vital co-worker has been out so I've been playing the part of 2 people each day.  Our team at work should be fully staffed at 5 people plus our team lead.  However, we are on a hard freeze and we have 4 people plus our team lead.  The hard part is that one of our four is brand new so it's hard to count the individual because she is only assigned one task right now.  With my other co-worker out my team lead puts a lot of responsibility on me.  I don't mind it at all, in fact I like being a go to person, I like feeling valued.  

Being busy at work means that my 7-3:30 shift gets over so quickly!  

I'm just hoping my co-worker is back tomorrow, because I'm feeling a little tired and I'm not sure how much longer I can hold on like this.  We are busy enough even with a full staff.

Another reason I'm beaming is because today I received another request for a photo project (same type as above).  

I'm excited to look for letters on my drive home from work each day and I can't wait for a sunny Saturday to go out with the camera!

So all in all life is going phenomenally well right now.  We are about 20 days from Thanksgiving (My Dad is coming!!!), which means 1 month 20 days until Christmas when we get to Kansas to visit the rest of the family (My Mom & her husband, Bud's Mom & Step-Dad, Bud's Dad & Step-Mom, & 1 of Bud's brothers).  We also get to see a lot of friends while we are up there!  It's an exciting time of year!

Battery Life

Did you know....that using your flash uses approximately 3x more of your battery than operating without a flash?
I didn't!
That was just one of the things I learned in my Beginning Digital Photography Class tonight.
My teacher is Matt Valentine, a widely published photographer, who is a local Austin photographer.
He has a way of explaining things so that they make sense and don't just sound like stuffy photography talk.
He said that learning to operate a camera is much like learning to drive a car.
At first you are overwhelmed with all the mirrors you have to check, the dials you need to monitor, and the overall attention to detail at every angle....but with time you don't even realize that you are monitoring those aspects any longer.
Just like photography.
Another thing Mr. Valentine taught us was that in most situations we should just say, "No" to the flash.
Of course there are specific instances when the flash CAN and WILL assist, but in many cases it can actually do more harm to a picture.
Also, I can finally stick my tongue out to all the people who gave me a hard time for using a flash in the middle of a sunny day!
We learned today that this is one time when the flash can assist in ensuring your subject doesn't have shadows when the sun is beating down on them, it's called Fill Flash!
Okay, so maybe I didn't know this when I used my flash before, but I did know my pictures looked better when I used a flash those times.
I'm excited because he asked us where we thought our weaknesses were.
I said I have a hard time taking indoor photos because it always seems the lighting makes the pictures look funny another person said they had a hard time with night photography.
I really would love to master night photography.
I have a goal.
Before we move away from Austin, I want to get a night shot of the skyline.  Something that might be frame worthy.  I might even try to get a picture of the UT Tower *gags*, just for my hubby.

Anyways...I feel bad that I had my first night of class and I don't have a single picture to post, but I do have an assignment to accomplish before next Monday's class.
I am supposed to try Fill Flash again...
