Baggies of Goodies

So I told you all yesterday that I was using the following tutorial to make favor bags for the bridal shower using Cheri's at I Am Momma Hear Me Roar tutorial!
Well here is a completed one:

Bridesmaid Diaries Part 5

Being a bridesmaid in 2 weddings is starting to catch up with me!
Phew, it's exhausting.
March 19th was KS's bridal shower and that went down wonderfully.
Now as I work through this week I realize that Saturday is DE's bridal shower and bachelorette party!!!!

Things I need to do this week:
1. Baseboards
2. Laundry- I need to get the sheets on the guest bed, a fellow bridesmaid is crashing here Friday night!
3. Clean bathrooms
4. Bath Dogs
5. Get Dogs nails clipped - Hubby is going to do this for me!
6. Vacuum & Mop
7. Wrap gifts & get card!
8. Write out recipe cards for gifts
9. Finish party favors for bridal shower

Things I've been frantically trying to help with last minute for the shower.
1. Finding a restaurant that will accommodate 15-20 guests on a Saturday night.  Turns out this hadn't been done yet, so I've been working hard to find something close to the hotel.
I bounced a few ideas off another bridesmaid and then shared them with the maid of honor.  We have thought that since we are a tad bit late making reservations that maybe we can order the food to go instead.  This way the women could eat while the bride opens all her lingerie gifts at the hotel!
Since most of the women at the shower are coming to dinner that night we could pass around the menu during the shower, take the orders and money and drop off the order when we get to Austin, hoping it'll be ready for pickup at 6:30.  Another idea is to see if any of the restaurants cater for a reasonable price.
I'm working fast to pull this together.
2. Finish up the bridal shower favors, we didn't have a final head count so I went with 25!  Still need to staple everything together.
3. Make a few things for the games at the shower/party.

It's exhausting to look at this list, but I know it can all be done!
It'd definitely be a tad bit easier if I didn't work full time, but I've handled this kind of craziness before and I can do it again.
I think after this weekend it'll be smoother sailing until the actual weddings in June.

So if I seem to be hit and miss this week in posting it'll be because of these lists.
I'm off to tackle the baseboards!

Bible Verse Friday #17

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” - 1 John 1:9


Oh but how sometimes we feel so unworthy of his forgiveness.
Haven't you thought at times, "But, God has forgiven me so many times for this sin, doesn't he get tired of my repeat offenses"?

I have thought this.

We all fall short of the glory of God.
But he still loves us.
He still wants us and he will wait for us.

Can you imagine if we were all perfect though?
Seems like if we were we would never feel that we needed God.

One of the millions of beautiful things about God is that he is a loving God.
We fall, he picks us up.
We fail, he helps us learn to succeed.
We turn away, he waits for us to return.
We ask for what we want, he provides what we need.

This is a simple message.
A simple message that is so easily forgotten.
I pray that you all had a Blessed Friday!

Book #15: The Silver Chair - C.S. Lewis

FINALLY!
I should have had this book review posted weeks ago, but I just haven't been able to find the time for leisurely reading lately.
This is book is the fourth book in The Chronicles of Narnia series and quite frankly it is so much different than any of the previous books.
The only child from the previous books to return to Narnia in this book is Eustace, formerly the mean-spirited cousin of Lucy, Edward, Peter & Susan.
If you recall from the last book, Eustace had a change of heart and character by the end of his 1st adventure and now desires more than anything to return to Narnia.
While away at school Eustace makes friends with a girl his age named Jill.
She is the brunt of the bully's jokes and while trying to comfort her one day he mentions a magical world where animals can talk.
It all begins here as with any other time that a trip to Narnia ensues.
This story is so much different, however, Narnia has aged quite some time since Eustace's last visit and upon returning he finds that King Caspian's son has been missing for 10 years and their mission is to help find him.
This tale is much darker and more grim than previous ones and as I read it there were times when I felt discouraged as I'm sure the characters in the book must have as well.
As always the mission is accomplished, but only after a multitude of hurdles had been jumped.
I think my favorite part of the book was the end though.
Not because I disliked the book, but because C.S. Lewis saves his most religious views for the end.  King Caspian is lying in the riverbed, Aslan sheds his blood over the passed King and the king arises young again, then he makes the following statement to the children who feel they are seeing a ghost:
""You think I'm a ghost, or some nonsense.  But don't you see?  I would be that if I appeared in Narnia now, because I don't belong there any more.  But one can't be a ghost in one's own country".
Then Aslan assures the children that they are not dead or in what I like to think of as Heaven, but that they will return to their own world and someday they WILL return to stay.
It's really quite beautifully written.
I encourage all of you yet again to please start reading these books, if not for yourself for a little person in your life.  Read a chapter a night as a bedtime story and watch their imaginations grow.

For those of you who are able to enjoy strawberries without any adverse reactions, congratulations.
I on the other hand am allergic.
It's nothing life threatening and if I wanted I could eat them, but I really don't want the heat rash type breakout that follows.

So since I'm allergic to strawberries I turn my attention to other, less praised berries.

Bus Stories

1st I'd like to apologize for going AWOL the last few days!
2nd I have to admit that I may be a horrible bridesmaid because I forgot my camera for the bridal shower and have nothing to show.
3rd this post is mostly going to talk about my amazing bus rides to Fort Worth.

Let's go back to Friday...it started out as the best day, but since that is an entirely different subject I'll save that for later.  Later that afternoon, my wonderful hubby brought me to the Greyhound station.  My bus from Austin to Dallas was supposed to take off at 2:25pm.
At 3pm I finally got on the bus.
I turned around and realized I was the last person they were allowing on the bus!
There had to have been at least 50 other people who had tickets for this bus.
I got the very last seat.
It was a window seat which I didn't mind, but the gentleman I was sitting by made the situation rather crowded.
He was as nice as could be and we talked quite a bit.
I had every intention of catching up on journaling, but with no tray table that was difficult.
I had other intentions of finishing book 4 of the Chronicles of Narnia Series so I could do a book review here....instead he talked.
I had grand ideas that I would get to nap part of the bus ride, but that was impossible as there didn't seem any good ways to end the conversation.
To top it off IH35 was a parking lot and it took 4 HOURS instead of 3 to get to Dallas.
My bus from Dallas to Ft. Worth was scheduled to leave at 6:50pm.
We rolled in at 7pm at which point I dashed off the bus, grabbed my suitcase and scrambled to one of the bus directors panting, "Is there still a Ft. Worth bus here".
It was my lucky day!

I got on the Ft. Worth bus and started to look for a seat.
There were quite a few very angry people.
People who had been ready to go for 10 minutes now.
I scooted past those people hoping to find an empty row that I might be able to hide in.
Nope.
But in the very back of the bus there are 3 seats together and only 1 guy back there.
I figured with a seat between us it couldn't be that bad.
He moved his stuff and informed me, "If you'd been a dude I wouldn't have moved my stuff, but since you are a lady I moved my stuff".
I thanked him kindly.
15 more minutes and we are still at the station.
The passengers are getting more and more upset.
Finally at 7:15 we hit the road...
Charlie Brown, my seat mate....decided to tell me all about his life.
Every detail, including the portion where he told me he has been off speed for 4 years.
I congratulated him.
He then said he has a heart palpitation?
He currently takes 3 medications which he attributes to his overactive energy.
Phew...he kept making comments that were off color.
I just sat there, trying to be polite and hoping that Ft. Worth would magically shift closer.
1 hour later we pull in.
I see KS one of my Brides waiting for me!
Charlie Brown goes right up to her and asks, "Is this your people"?
"Yes", I reply and then I abandon her so I can procure my suitcase...I knew we couldn't leave until I had that.
Apparently, he took the opportunity to sing my praises.
I hope he is clean and I wish him the best.
It's true that we never know how we will influence people.
Despite my uncomfortable bus rides and my initial desires to keep to myself...it's possible I may have somehow helped these 2 guys just by talking with them.

The next day was the bridal shower and KS made out!
It made me wish I could have a shower.
When I got married nearly 7 years ago I had no idea what I needed, KS obviously did.
She got FIESTA WARE, 4 of their 12 sets at least.
I had the lovely job of folding all the tissue paper after gifts were opened and I'm convinced that the bride and groom won't need to purchase any tissue paper for their entire 1st year of marriage....maybe longer ;)

It was a quick trip to turn around and head home.
I caught my 5:40 bus from Ft. Worth to Dallas and sat next to a woman who was already 1/2 asleep when I boarded.
Then I caught the 7:15 bus from Dallas to Austin and low and behold I got an entire row all to myself.
Want to know what I did?
I SLEPT!!!!!
It wasn't the best sleep, but it was sleep and my body was exhausted.
Bud picked me up from the Greyhound station at 10:15 and it was so good to be home.
Don't get me wrong, celebrating with my bride was glorious too, but there doesn't seem to be anything quite like my husbands arms!

I have another busy week ahead of me.
It's full of finishing some 1/2 done projects and some continued work on a major craft I've been working on.
I can't wait to fill everyone in on that one....

Bud's Spontaneous!

So about my weekend!
It was fabulous!
Saturday I accomplished some much needed housework.
Bud had work until 4pm and upon arriving home made sure to utter the magic words:
"Babe, the house looks great, you did so much today"!
He's good.
Then he asked if I had planned dinner yet.
I hadn't and his response was perfect.
"I was thinking I could take you out".
So 45 minutes later I'm showered and ready and we are out the door.
Bud brought me to a place called Perla's.
We had walked past it a half dozen times and it's a Seafood & Oyster Bar.
I love seafood....strike that...I love crab!
Well funny story.
We arrived, are seated immediately and look at the menu.
It's pricey, but Bud had planned for that.
There is only one dish on the menu that has crab and it's a NY Strip with King Crab.
In all honesty I don't need that much food so we ask if there is any way to get just crab and the server confirmed we could get it al dente.
So I got crab with a side of DELICIOUS grilled asparagus with hollandaise sauce.
Bud got sword fish and a side of fancy hash browns (at least that's what we dubbed them).

We were both a little surprised.
We know that I can easily eat 24oz of crab!

Bud & I have a silly tradition....we try to remember to do it on special date nights...

They asked if we'd like to see a dessert menu, but we had already made up our mind that if the dessert was anywhere near the size of the meal, we'd be left wanting.
So we paid and walked a block down and a block over to one of our favorite Ice Cream places Amy's Ice Cream!
After strolling back to the car and enjoying our yummy dessert we headed to the IMAX where Bud works to go see I Am Number Four.  In all honesty if they make sequels, I'll go see them.  It took the movie an entire hour to lay out the back story and love story and finally in the last 30-40 minutes the action packed fun started.  I'm all for the action!
It was a lovely evening and a perfect night for the hubby and I.


Sunday we had church and while Bud tackled his homework, during Spring Break I might add, I finished my quilt!

Beginners Quilting #4

I'm so sorry I've been away all weekend!
I would post about the weekend I had, but that'll have to wait until tomorrow.
The reason is that all the pictures of this weekend are on my husband's camera, which is not in my possession right now.
SO...
to make up for that I'm going to show you what I learned in my final quilting class!

WARNING this is picture heavy ;)

1st we made our own binding by sewing 2-1/2"
wide strips together.
2nd we sewed it onto the front side of our quilt.

Grab the binding

fold around the edge of your quilt 

so that it lines up on the back side of your quilt.

NOW for the magic knot trick our teacher swears
by.
Thread your needle, you will not double it.

grab the very end of your thread and wrap it
around your finger 3 times.

gently roll it off your finger

it should look like this.

slide your finger along the thread above the "knot"
beginning gently tightening your knot.

Your knot should look like this.
It's done....whatever you do don't pull the very
end of that string.

Now for securing that binding.
Thread the needle & thread through the back layer
of fabric and the binding.
Be sure not to go through your front quilt layer.

Pull tight and then tuck that messy knot into the
binding.  It's safe in there and because of the type
of knot...you'll never have to worry about it
wiggling through or coming undone.

*Take your needle to the right of your initial stitch.
Pierce the back quilt layer..again be sure not to push
your needle through to the front quilt layer.

Now feed that needle in between your back quilt
layer and batting about the width of a finger..
(it doesn't hurt to look at your front quilt layer and
make sure you don't see a needle or thread)

Pop that needle out and pierce the binding.
Pull.
Start again back on the step with the (*)

About every 6 stitches I like to tack down.
In doing this you will go to the right of your stitch
and pull through the back layer and the binding,
pull straight up.

To finish a section of thread you'll start by tacking
down and then you'll pull your needle, again,
to the right of the stitch, pierce the back fabric
and the binding...wrap your thread around the needle
3 times and then pull through.  This will create a
nice knot.

Now I forgot to get a picture of the last step, but in order to hide that thread end....after you create that nice knot, pull your needle and thread back to the right of that stitch...feed the needle in between the back of your quilt without piercing it...and into the binding.  Feed the needle through a random spot in your binding and clip the extra thread.  When you wash it'll pull any thread in and keep it hidden between the binding.  (I hope that makes sense, if not, let me know & I'll try to take some example pictures for a later post).

Bible Verse Friday #16

"Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments" ~Deuteronomy 7:9

This verse is part of a series of verses in which Moses speaks to the Israelites as they prepared to reach the promised land.  This generation of Israelites were the ones who had grown up wandering and who had not experienced the liberation from Egypt.
He is promising them the same things he promised their forefathers. 
If they love him and keep his commandments he will take care of them.
Some research here shed light on the fact that the Israelites were promised physical land, where as we are promised and eternal inheritance.

We must remember that our inheritance is not of this earth.
No amount of stuff will ever compare the the biggest gift he has planned for us.
The only way we can obtain this gift though is to live our lives loving him and honoring his commandments.

I pray that as you contemplate this you will take a moment to thank our heavenly father for all he has provided you with here, but thank him even more for the gift we have yet to receive!

P.S. Please take a moment to pray for the earthquake victims in Japan.  It's easy for things a world and a half away to feel just that, so far, but you never know who you might have been affected by this tragedy.
I was happy to hear that a tsunami did not hit Maui where my grandparents live this time of year.  I was glad to hear that my friend who is visiting California didn't have to evacuate.  But my heart still aches after seeing all the tragic footage of Japan.  So stop for a moment and pray for all those affected.

Beginners Quilting #3

So for our 3rd class we tackled the actual quilting!!
First we used a washable marker to draw out where we were going to quilt.
I did what is called a echo stitch (according to my teacher) which means I quilted on both sides of each line I drew.

It's a little difficult to see because I used a cream
thread, but wherever you see those blue lines there
is a sewn line on each side.

Now watch...because magic is about to happen

Tada....see how that section of line is gone?
This marker literally comes right off with a wet rag.
Any spots I may miss will come off when I wash
the final project.

Here is a view of the back and how the quilting
looks on the back.

The fabric on the back is from the same line
as the front fabric and my teacher informed me
that quilters call this cheater fabric.
Mostly because if I would have sewn a line between all
the patches it would have looked like I quilted
each of those hexagons.

Anyways, tomorrow night we will be squaring up and finishing off.

We will learn about binding both with our sewing machine and by hand.

In other news I had to borrow the teachers sewing project to do my homework because my sewing machine has official given up.

I'll be scrounging up $65-80 to bring her in for servicing, but in the mean time I'm happy to have a rental!

Blue skies smiling at me...

nothing but blue skies  do I see!
Today Bud & I went to take a look at the beautiful blue skies of Austin.
We were prompted to do this because today was the KITE FESTIVAL!

It was amazing to see so many kites all being flown simultaneously.

And so many different kinds of kites.

Flying kites seems to make EVERYONE smile.
Except for one cute little girl.
She was crying as her kite flew higher and higher.
We heard her Dad ask her, "You don't want it that high"?
She whimpered back, "No"!
We could only surmise that feared her kite would never come back to her, too cute!

I sure will miss the Austin skyline and all the fun activities that go on here.
As our time dwindles down in Austin, Bud & I are making it a point to see as much as we can!
It's honestly impossible for me to show you how many people were at Zilker Park today...the skyline picture only shows a fraction of people in the park.
The energy was rejuvenating.
For lunch we stopped at a food trailer and got sushi!
Yes, sushi from a food trailer, freshly prepared!
California roll for me.
Shrimp Tempura roll for Bud.
Edamame to hold us over while we waited.
It was a glorious day and I have the tint of pink on my skin to prove the sunshiny weather!

Bubble Bath

I've had one of those lazy days that you only seem to allow yourself once a year.
It involved doing nothing, literally all day.
Bud had plans to go with friends to San Antonio to order their Dress Mess (an Officer's fancy dress blue uniform).
After that he headed to Fredericksburg to do some research on his semester paper.

I on the other had lounged on the couch all day.
I ate my left over ribs for lunch and ordered takeout for dinner.
Beef & Broccoli and Wonton Soup!
I took 2 naps.
I made and received a few phone calls.

The dogs enjoyed the lazy day too.
The took turns laying by the couch next to me.
They hardly bothered me, knowing today needed to be a day of nothingness.
I watched junk television and a Return of the Mummy.
Bud came home and was home for a short time before heading out again.
He had more plans to go out with the guys tonight, which worked perfectly with my continued lazy night.
I ran and took a wonderful bubble bath w/ epsom salt.
What I haven't mentioned is I have had a HORRIBLE crick in my next all day, so I hoped that the bath would help.
Well it seems to be a success, I'm feeling much more relaxed and can finally turn my head.

I won't have the opportunity to do this again for quite sometime so I'm thankful today was a success!
If you haven't had one of these days...I strongly encourage you find the time.

The only downside is that now I have laundry and cleaning that MUST be done tomorrow, but right now it all seems worth it.

It's not only something I want to share with you, but it's a weekly reminder for myself to dissect His word and carry it out!

Bible Verse Friday #15

"Have I not commanded you?  Be strong and courageous.  Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go".~Joshua 1:9

This verse is just one of the many things that God told Joshua, son of Nun, Moses's aide; after Moses died.
Joshua was given the important task to take the people across the Jordan river to the land that God promised to Moses.

Let's take this verse and disect it.
God asks "Have I not commanded you?"
How often do we go day to day doing our will instead of the will that God has commanded us to do?
We get selfishly overwhelmed in day to day musings and forget that his purpose is greater than our own.
I am guilty of getting caught up in my own mess and then Sunday rolls around and I finally remember, "Oh yeah...that's how I should have handled this or that situation".

God commands "Be strong and courageous"...not weak and scared, not meek and skiddish...
STRONG!
COURAGEOUS!
Have any of you read Captivating by John & Stasi Eldredges?
an excerpt from the Amazon website describing this book says this:
"the Eldredges reveal in the first chapter what every woman's three core desires are: to be romanced, to play a role in her own adventures and to display beauty."
God has put it in our hearts to want to be part of a big adventure...how can we possibly do this if we are anything except strong and courageous!

God says, "Do not be afraid"
Now that is hard.
We have so many reasons to fear.
Have you watched the news?
Is there anything out there that isn't scary?
Have we not all experienced something tragic that we are afraid to experience again?
I am dealing with this right now (it goes back to my worst day ever in November...don't worry I'm getting much closer to being able to share that with all of you).
I am struggling with a fear that I will go through it all over again and that I might not be able to get past it so easily if it happens again.
But know that there is also a HUGE part of me that is not afraid.
I'm praising God daily and letting his plan swing into motion.
So do not be afraid, instead when that fear creeps in....
STOP.
PRAISE GOD.
CLAIM HIS PROMISES.
Believe it or not, this simple action helps those waves of fear turn into ripples and eventually makes them placid.

God also says, "do not be discouraged".
This might be even harder than "do not be afraid".
I don't know about you all, but when something doesn't go as I intended I DO get discouraged.
Take this quilting class I'm taking.
My sewing machine has experienced one problem after another.
My teacher finally told me Wednesday night that I really should bring it to be serviced.
That's discouraging for a number of reasons.
A.) it's $65-80 to have a sewing machine serviced- and yes I know that after they work on it I shouldn't have to have it serviced for a while again.
B.) I feel like I've moved slower than anyone else in the class because of my machine trouble.
C.) It's made quilting seem more daunting that it probably really is.
We get discouraged when traffic is bad, when dinner burns, when our to do lists don't turn into things done list.
But he tells us not to become discouraged.
Does anyone have any advice for how we can overcome those moments of discouargement?

Finally God assures us, "for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go".
Do you feel that?
The weight of the world lifting off of your shoulders.
I literally read that and breathed a sigh of relief.
No matter what happens God is with me.
When I am afraid, he is there.
When I get discouraged, he is there.
When I set out on an adventure, he is there!
And with that I know that I can...
STOP.

PRAISE HIM.
CLAIM HIS PROMISES.
And he will ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS be there.
Take solace in this.

Beginners Quilting #2

so I've just finished my homework assignment from my second quilting class.
Nothing like waiting until the day before it's due to squeeze it in.
In case I forgot to mention we are making a 9 square block quilt 36"x36".

I should have taken the picture of the mistake I made.

Seam rippers were involved and resewing a few of these blocks did in fact happen.

Let's just say 3 of my blocks were vertical stripped and only one was horizontal....Oops.

I'm very pleased with how it's coming along.

Only two more classes until this baby quilt is finished and ready to be sent to baby Ava!

I'm very happy with how my corners lined up thus far!

Our teacher had apparently told us not to get a striped or directional pattern.

Obviously I missed that, but I think my first attempt of working with stripes went well!

I'm sorry that I haven't had much to say lately.

I've been so busy and when I'm not busy I'm sleeping.

I am hoping to have much more soon!
